Meet Jamie Heimer //

//Artist behind GemxSpillz

Jamie Heimer’s {GemxSpillz} art career began unexpectedly, in June of 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis. Walking the streets of  her hometown city throughout quarantine, she was inspired by the graffiti and street art that covered the plywood of all of the boarded up businesses. By chance encounter, Jamie eventually stumbled upon an opportunity to paint a mural of her own. “I just wanted to add light and love to the city, however I could, in what felt like such a dark and hopeless time.” Having never painted before, the challenge of that mural sparked a creative flame that’s been burning bright ever since.
“At first, all of what I painted on was discarded wood that I found in the city, mostly behind dumpsters. Soon, my friends and family started donating old canvases or wood that they had laying around.” After only a couple of years in the making, Jamie has created countless pieces, and shows no signs of slowing down. Dedicated teacher by day, abstract artist by night, Jamie glows with gratitude as she talks about her successes. “I know it’s the most cliché thing to say, but it feels like I’m living a dream. To not only have the love and passion of being a teacher, but also now the joy and beauty of becoming an artist, I’m just grateful beyond words.”
Jamie paints on any and everything, and tries as often as possible to turn trash into treasure. Acrylic paint, spray paint, graffiti supplies, and stencils are just a few of the main players. Her artistic style varies from abstract expressionism, to street-art style (graffiti-inspired), to more finely detailed portraits, or even doodles. When asked what inspires her most, Jamie laughed as she had a hard time narrowing it down. “Feelings and emotions, nature, my students, the moon, relationships, spirituality, the use of words... I mean, honestly, what doesn’t inspire me?!”
Not only can you feel Jamie’s joyful, radiating energy in her art, she offers a one of kind uniqueness and outgoing vibe to live painting events. Check out the events page for any upcoming opportunities to meet and experience the presence of GemxSpillz.
